Traffic Violations & License Suspension

If you receive a speeding ticket or ticket for any traffic violation, the matter is more serious than simply paying the fine. For most tickets that you sign and remit payment, the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) records the traffic violation to your driving record. Repeat traffic offenders may face steep fines and, more importantly, suspension or revocation of their driver's license.

The law firm of Thomas A. Camp, P.C. recognizes how indispensable driving privileges are. A suspended license can impair your ability to get to work - or anywhere, for that matter. That is why criminal defense attorney Tom Camp is dedicated to helping clients challenge traffic tickets in Georgia. Contact the Athens law firm to discuss how he can help.

Points for Traffic Violations

Under Georgia traffic laws, points are assessed to your driving record for certain traffic violation conviction (including paid tickets). If you accumulate 15 points within two years, your license will be suspended. The following are examples of traffic point allocations for Georgia traffic offenses:

  • Speeding: ranges from 2 points to 6 points depending on how far above the limit you were driving (15 mph over; 19 mph over; 24 mph over; 34 mph over)
  • Reckless driving: 4 points
  • Passing a school bus: 6 points
  • Running a red light: 3 points
  • Other traffic offenses: most other traffic offenses carry 3 points

In addition, if convicted for driving with a suspended license, you face additional license suspension for up to 6 more months.

Protect Yourself from Mandatory License Revocation

While the DDS may choose to suspend your license following accumulation of points to your driving record, there are certain traffic violations which will result in automatic mandatory revocation, such as DUI, hit and run, breath test refusal in a DUI case and racing, among others.

Whether you have been issued a traffic citation for speeding or for hit and run, Tom Camp is here to protect your rights and driving privileges. His experience in municipal courts and other state courts has proven beneficial for many clients in their attempt to challenge a traffic violation.
